![We are excited to announce that the translocation of southern white rhinos is now complete! Loisaba Conservancy is now home to 10 southern white rhinos, joining our 24 eastern black rhinos to create one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya hosting both species.
This introduction is part of Kenya’s National Rhino Conservation and Management Action Plan, and was made possible through the collaboration of @KenyaWildlifeService, @LewaConservancy, @ShjSafari, and @LoisabaConservancy.
While southern white rhinos are not native to Kenya, they play a crucial role in species recovery, conservation education, and tourism, and their presence strengthens our commitment to biodiversity and ecosystem management. The rhinos were carefully selected and moved using advanced translocation techniques. Instead of fully tranquilising the rhinos, they were lightly sedated and calmly walked into transport crates, allowing veterinarians to monitor their vital signs and ensure a safe, stress-minimized journey. They are already settling into their new home, grazing peacefully alongside our black rhinos across Loisaba’s 58,000 acres.
This achievement reflects Kenya’s leadership in wildlife conservation and the power of collaboration, science-based management, and strategic planning to secure a future for these magnificent animals.
